The 21st Friendly Greeting From Shirley, China, Sun, Jan 8, 2006

How are you? How is your first week going in the new year? I do hope everything is well with you and have a wonderful weekend. : -)

In the past 7 days in the new year. I did do a lot of work. During my holiday, I completed a long work report for the company and mentioned out 4 suggestions on the company’s products producing, organization form, database construction and new projects running ( A good news is that one of projects that I took part in from 2002 to 2004 has been nominated to get the science prograss reward in the city in 2005). In the 3 business day this week, except the daily work, I had at least 4 or 5 meetings in the 3 business days. The most difficult thing that I dealt with was to perform a decision of the company to inform a senior employee who will be fired by the company. Also, I'll have to help her to find a new job while help her to improve herself as the director of the woman committee and an "elder sister". Latter is a job that I want to do by myself to help a woman who has many difficulties and reality problems in her life and work.

Do you know? In my city there is the highest salary level in China and also there is the hottest competition in China. There are many people are competing a same work position always. I remember that when I was in my first company in 1992, we needed 2 information analysts, but we got 96 applications. And in the current company in 2004, we needed 1 English translator and we got about 200 resumes. Before 1994, except a holder of doctoral degree or a high title of a technical post, all of people had to pass some professional and combine skill examinations, then could have the qualification to be a formal resident in the city (Right now, there are only about 10% of peoepl in the city are the formal residents with an ID of this city). Until 1995, the holders of master degrees not need to be tested and now, the holders of bachelor degrees need not be tested …

This policy has really brought the highest level human resource and the quickest development speed of the city and also the hottest competition.

Now in some companies, they fire 5% people whose yearly achievement are listed in the last positions and also employ a same percent new employees every year and our company is one of them. Anyway, we have to give some compensating to these people as well. Just for this very cruel reality, I have been asking myself and the colleagues around me to learn something new every day and to improve ourselves every day, to have an ability to face any suddenly difficult situation and the development of the times...

To be honest, sometimes, I do feel it is too cruel and also I wept many times when I just came into the city to face the totally new life and work circumstance from a very beautiful and comfortable city in the east of China. But now, I have been used of facing any difficult and hard situation. Also, I am thinking, from the other side, this is also a good thing to people and to myself to improve ourselves every day. Sometimes, pressure is also a good motivity if we can guide it to a right direction, then, we can create more great work and not be washed out of the times. Do you think so?

How about you? How about your policy in human recourse management?
