Listen to Shirley Singing the Song In English June 14, 2009 in the USListen to Shirley Singing the Song in Chinese June 14, 2009 in the USPouch is a small bag and be tied on the waists of men to take some little things or money. It is often as a keepsake between lovers in some areas of China, such as in Shanxi, Sichuan and Yunnan and it is often embroidered by handwork. There are many different Chinese folk songs to sing on this topic. I mean there are several visions of lyrics, but the music is same or similar.
It expresses an excited and a little bit shying heart when a young girl is embroidering a pouch for her lover.
I learned this song in my music lesson in 2005 and 2006 and I could only sing it in Chinese then. This Friday, after attending an examination in the morning, having religion lesson, reading Bible and preparing a new book for my next course in the afternoon, having running in the evening... I re-translated, sang and recorded this song in both English and Chinese first time.
I really hope to bring you an enjoyment while to be some help to you learn Chinese and Chinese culture -- when you go to Shangxi, Yunnan or Sichun, you will know why some men take pouches on their waists, especially the men from countryside; also, you will be careful to accept a pouch from a girl. :-)
Meanwhile, I wish that you find that I have made a little bit progress on my singing and English... :-)

Embroider Pouch
Kalends to the fifteen,
Fifteen's moon is high.
The spring breeze is waving
the leaves of poplars and willows.
Peach blossom blooms in March,
you sent words coming,
you want to have a pouch made by me.
Embroidering a ship at the first,
It is setting sail.
The meaning in my picture,
Let you guess it out.
Embroidering a couple of mandarin ducks,
they are roosting by the river,
leaning against each other,
never separate forver.
You are a young man,
I am a girl like a flower,
when you get my pouch,
you should come back early...
