The 45th Friendly Greeting From Shirley, China, Sun, July 9, 2006

Hi,Dear Friends
How are you? Is everything well with you? I do hope you are well and have a relaxed weekend.
As usual, it is a busy week for me. Anyway, no matter how busy I am, I keep reading three industry newspapers and one local newspaper as soon as I enter my office in the morning to know what have happened in the industry, country and the world. They will help me to make a quickly daily judgment to see whether our work and my projects still keep on a right way to serve the industry and the country... I think, maybe one of duties of a manager is just to hold the direction of a work or a project or a company, instead of the details. A manager should be a captain of a ship instead of a sailor. Do you think so?
This week, I have checked at least 9 contracts that relate to our different business on television, web sites, telephone, plane design, technology serve, information publishing and so on. The feeling was very complex when I worked on it. One side, I felt that I do have a responsibility to help the young people to grow up as soon as possible, not only on their business level, but also on their writing level. The other side, I also feel that maybe our university education has to think something more to serving for the society practice with more useful lessons. Can you imagine? Most of the young people who have bachelors or master degrees can not really write a formal office document well. So, I had to show them how to write and correct their contracts according to their different business one by one. It is not strange for me to see this situation because I also started to learn to write a formal office document after leaving from the university and in the work in the companies even though I was major in Chinese language and literature for 5 years, had learned about 30 kinds of lessons and could recite at least 1000 classical poems… : -)
Have you written any contract or document in person? Where and when did you learn to write an office document? Do you think your university lessons arrangement is suitable?
This week, the biggest progress on my little web site is that my edition system has had a new function that allows me to invite someone to correct my English or the content that I have appointed on the web site from any place in the world. So, if you are a native English speaker or a friend who is working in English, you are welcomed as a volunteer to help me to correct my writing, or to introduce something from your own culture or to offer an English lesson.

Chinese Xieyi -- 084(Flower & Bird): A Beautiful Fall
I did not satisfy my 83rd Chinese Xieyi picture, so I re-painted this one and I have corrected a lot of places on it. The happiest feeling that this picture brought me is that I suddenly felt that finally I have had the ability to create and to paint a chrysanthemum freely. I mean that finally I am able to paint a chrysanthemum with my brush directly already, need not to see any thing as a swatch, just paint according the feature in my mind. To be free on creating something is really the best feeling after learning to pain for 3 years and 3 months. After I completed it, I also felt that I have completed a color draft for my next Chinese Gongbi or Gouache painting. I will show it for you later. How do you think of this picture? Are you glad for my little progress?

Chinese Xieyi--083(Flower & Bird): A Failed Picture
I created this picture in my art lesson and I did not satisfy it for all of the things on it seem like very confused and the flower part below is too loose. The buds seem like two crabs and the ships are just like some television antennas... :-) The only good part that I feel is that I have known how to paint the yellow chrysanthemum with a brush directly... So, I decided to re-paint it as soon as I finished my lesson. Anyway, I still publish the failed picture here for I want to remember this lesson and I do thank you for sharing my fail on this picture. :-)

Shirley Sung Chinese (Taiwan/Gao Shan Nation) Folk Song--0027: Ali Shan Moutain's Girl
In Chinese culture, people think that a woman is made of water and a man is made of mud. So, in the literature and art works, men are often compared to mountains for their high, strong and stable, women are often compared to rivers for their soft, tender and flexible... This Taiwan’s Gaoshan nation folk just expresses this meaning typically. I enjoy its romantic lyrics, beautiful music and funny local dialect -- Its main meaning is written in mandarin, there are many interesting local dialect in it to help to express the main meaning. I do hope you enjoy it.

Chinese Classical Poem--0047 & Shirley Created Music-0037: Chuzhou Xi Jian -- By the West Gully Of Chuzhou
This is a famous little poem. It writes out a beautiful landscape with a simple language -- peaceful green grass is growing by the gully, happy yellow birds are singing over the tree, rapid spring tide is coming in a rain night and an alone boat is staying by the wild ferry. Every line is a pretty picture and whole of the poem is a group of pictures with sounds. As far as the poet itself, to leave it to you to imagine...As usual, I have created a piece of music to match it and to played and sing it for you. I do hope that my poem comments, music and singing. Will bring you a big smile.
