This is my 56th Combined Paintingthat I have created / painted for Chinese Classical Poetry, and my 656th painting since 2003 ; also, it is my 26th assignment in Chinese National Academy of Arts.
This is the 3rd time I created a painting to match the Chinese poem /lyric ? Xiang Jianhuan - Joy in the Meeting by a king without his kingdom - Li Yu ( 937 - 978) .
This poem/lyric does not only express the deep pain of Li Yu as a captive emperor, but also, it expresses a general human feeling with a beautiful but sad language style, it is really too abstract to express via a painting, so, even though I had created 2 paintings to match it in 2007 and 2010. I had not been thinking they were good enough to match the meaning of this lyric. Therefore, I tried the third time this week, I would like to express it by an alone phoenix ? Chinese culture, both of emperor and queen are usually compared to as phoenix.
Also, I had created a piece of music to match this poem/lyric in 2007 and hope you enjoy it.
I do hope my effort can be some help with you to learn Chinese culture and language.
Main Meaning of the Poem
Xian Jian Hua --Joy in the Meeting
By Li Yu ( South Tang )
Silent, climb the west tower alone, to see the moon like hook. Lonesome phoenix tree in the deep yard is locked in the fall/autumn.
Can’t be cut to sever, Can’t be combed clear, It is the grief of parting. An unspeakable taste is in my heart.

相见欢
李煜 (南唐)
无 言 独 上 西楼, 月如钩。 寂寞梧桐深院锁清秋。
剪不断, 理 还 乱, 是离愁。 别是一番滋味 在心头。
